Has anything changed in ESL since Kozol's book was published?

No. The conditions in East St. Louis have stayed on the decline since Kozol's book was published. Volunteers continue to help the community in hopes to rebuild the schools and make East St. Louis a better place.

Mitchell, Melissa. "20-year-old partnership with East St. Louis reaps many benefits for residents, students." News Bureau. Oct. 2007: University of Illinois. http://www.news.uiuc.edu/news/07/07f_pm_eslarp.html.

This article confirms Kozol's portrayal of East St. Louis and its poor living conditions. This article added to the painting of poverty and poor living conditions and Kozol gave to us in his book. Unfortunately, it shows that these conditions have not increased since the publishing on Kozol's book which lead me to believe that the East St. Louis goverment is still not in order and the schools are still unfit for educational puproses. This article also leads me to belive that despite the publicity of Kozol's book, no aid has been provided, continuing the circle of poverty in the community.

*Why didn't the governor take action to improve the schools?

The reason why the governor did not take action to improve the schools was because he believed the horrible problems that were occurring in East St. Louis were because of the way the black mayor and his administrators. He deliberately told the mayor that he would keep on refusing to grant loans until the mayor resigned.

This article stating why the governor did not take action to improve the schools confirms and is the same reason that Kozol gave in his novel to why the governor refused to help improve the schools located in East St. Louis. During that time segregation was still an enormous issue and when reading this article it leads me to believe that the governor might have had or still had strong issues about segregration in East St. Louis by refusing to accept and grant these loans.
